Arcadia
Backcountry trails in the Jefferson National Forest, best suited to intermediate-to-expert riders comfortable with long climbs, technical rocky descents, and self-navigation. 40+ miles of singletrack and fire road featuring legendary descents like Terrapin Mtn, Pine Ridge, and Cove/Little Cove, with rides typically running 10–20+ miles. Camping available at both organized campgrounds and dispersed sites.
Carvins Cove
Premier all-skill destination system inside the nation's second-largest municipal park, spanning beginner-friendly "lowers," intermediate XC "mids," and expert gravity-oriented "uppers" like Rattlin' Run and Royalty. Roughly 60 miles of multi-use trail (~32 miles dedicated singletrack) across 12,000+ acres, anchoring Roanoke's IMBA Silver-Level Ride Center status. Just 10–15 min from downtown Roanoke.
Explore Park
Beginner-to-intermediate, family-friendly system built around the region's first IMBA stacked-loop design, plus the Blue Ridge Bike Center skills park and the Voyager jump trail for progression. ~14 miles of trail, mostly easy-to-moderate loops along the Roanoke River. Located off Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 115. On-site camping, cabins/yurts, Twin Creeks Brewpub, disc golf, and a paved greenway connection to Roanoke.
Falling Creek Park
All-skills system with a strong beginner/intermediate focus, plus a dedicated bike skills park and a handful of downhill lines for progression. Roughly 9–10 miles of mostly singletrack, compact and switchback-heavy. About 45 min east of Roanoke in Bedford, with on-site disc golf, playground, skate park, picnic shelters, and paved fitness path, plus the National D-Day Memorial and Smith Mountain Lake nearby.
Mill Mountain
Multi-use system with advanced-beginner to expert singletrack, now anchored by The Hub, a bike-only downhill area with green/blue/black flow and jump lines for progression. ~15 miles of trail with punchy climbs, rock and root features, and city-valley overlooks atop Roanoke's 1,703-ft summit. Less than 5 min from downtown via the paved Mill Mountain Greenway (rideable car-free from town).
Montvale Park
Compact, primarily intermediate stacked-loop system (beginner/sport/expert lap options) with family-friendly singletrack plus a black-diamond Ridgeline trail for more advanced riders. Roughly 6.5–7 miles of entirely wooded singletrack across 129 acres, with stream crossings and footbridges, part of Bedford's Taste of the Trails race series. About 15 min west of Bedford off U.S. 460 between Roanoke and Lynchburg.
New London Tech Trails
Beginner-friendly, family-oriented system of bike-optimized, machine-cut flow trails with smooth rolling terrain, color-coded loops, and minimal technical features, ideal for newcomers and quick lunch-hour rides. Roughly 6.5–7 miles of multi-use singletrack across 500+ acres, easy-to-moderate. Located off U.S. 460 in Forest near Lynchburg, with convenient parking, portable restrooms, and a 19-hole disc golf course on-site.
Spec Mines Dody Ridge
Expert-level backcountry riding in Jefferson National Forest, prized by advanced riders for big climbs, technical limestone rock gardens, and gnarly descents (not for beginners). Riders can choose shorter loops or the full 33–41 mile, 5,000+ ft Blue Ridge Parkway Epic combining Glenwood, Mineshaft, Spec Mines, and Dody Ridge. Trailhead at Day Creek parking ~15–20 min east of Roanoke near Montvale.
Waid Park
All-skills system spanning a beginner Bike Skills Loop, intermediate XC singletrack, and advanced/technical features like Skeletor and the black-diamond Old Buzzard jumpline (15 consecutive jumps, 26-ft sender, fully roll-able for progression). Over 15 miles of multi-use trail across 500 acres, with rock gardens, wooden ramps, and river crossings. About 35 min south of Roanoke near Rocky Mount.
